Poetry Park was built in 1987, is located in the center of town, in a confluence of Jevonis and Šešupė rivers.
There are about 100 varieties of trees and shrubs growing here.
The city center's image was spoiled by industrial-farm buildings with high chimneys. Therefore Javonis River’s stream management and park planning projects were prepared. In 1984 reconstruction began: several buildings and residential houses were demolished, as well as one of the oldest town’s streets was erased from existence.
The development of the park began in 1984: Javonis River was cleared, fountains, decorative bridges and benches was built. The park was decorated with the sculpture by J. Narušis "Šešupė". In 1987 an oak was planted to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of Marijampolė and Kokkola towns’ friendship. The park was loved by the Marijampolians and the city's guests.
The place was reborn after park’s reconstruction in 2012. The project was supported by the European Union funds, implemented by architects G. Vieversys, T. Eidukevičius, A. Byčenkovas, R. Marcinkevičienė and A. Marcinkevičius. After the reconstruction, water became the main accent of the park, the banks of Javonis River were lined up with Vytautas Street’s paving stones, shores of Šešupė River cleaned and newly arranged. The bridges were updated, only the previous image of Love Bridge was saved. The tracks were laid with clinker pads, comfortable benches, and a playground for children. There are several zones for chamber events and an amphitheater in the Poetry Park, which has become a great place for local artists and professionals from other cities. A monument to Vytautas Kernagis's song "Kai sirpsta vyšnios Suvalkijoj" ("When cherries ripen in Suvalkija") was unveiled in 2012.
